On October 29, Hohai University hosted the 2022 Annual Meeting of the International Discipline Union of Hydraulics and Environment. The hybrid event was attended by domestic and foreign experts and scholars from Georgia Institute of Technology, Delft University of Technology, the University of Stuttgart, Cardiff University, the University of Oklahoma, the University of Waterloo, the University of Toronto, the University of Hong Kong, Tsinghua University, Zhejiang University, Wuhan University, Sichuan University, China Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research, and Nanjing Hydraulic Research Institute. The attendees explored the development opportunities and challenges facing the disciplines of hydraulics and environment in the context of climate change. Professor Xu Weiya, Vice President of Hohai University, made opening remarks, and Professor Yu Zhongbo, Chairman of UNESCO-IHP, delivered a keynote speech.

Prof. Xu noted that as one of the leading universities in the disciplines of hydraulics and environment in the world, Hohai University, together with first-class universities at home and abroad, has initiated the International Discipline Union of Hydraulics and Environment on the basis of giving full play to the advantages of profound basic research and interdisciplinary integration. The Union will be committed to building a multilateral long-term cooperation mechanism for high-level talent training and scientific research, promoting interdisciplinary scientific and technological progress in water and environment around the world and contributing to the building of a community with a shared future for mankind.

Six scholars including Marcel Stive, Professor of Delft University of Technology and member of the Royal Dutch Institution of Engineers (KIVI), delivered academic reports respectively. Focusing on the themes of world water security, coastal zone security, flash flood disaster, and the development of hydraulics and environment disciplines, the reports discussed in depth the new requirements and propositions of climate change for the development of hydraulics and environment disciplines, and shared the advanced concepts and latest achievements in the development of those disciplines, providing constructive solutions to the problems in water resources, environment and security.

During the meeting, all members of the Union approved the list of the Council members and the 2023 plan for academic events.
