Research Resonating with Project Practice

Date: 22-23 April 2023, Nanjing, China

We are in an era of rapid change. Project management practices face a new set of challenges. Driven by big data and other digital technologies, as well as the post-pandemic era and increasing global economic uncertainty, the environment of project management has changed significantly, and the transformation of project management organization and process faces huge opportunities and challenges.

Innovation is the primary force guiding development. Under the new environment, new management issue, new application scenarios, new methods and tools are constantly emerging in the process of project management practice. This provides a rich source for the academic research oriented to the needs of management practice, and also provides opportunities to co-create value for the enterprise’s management practice.

Therefore, we urgently need to build a more open and inclusive project management innovation ecology, so that the project management practice community and academic community can better interact and communicate, and jointly explore the concerned hot spots, pain points and solutions in project management practice. At the same time, the academia also needs to expand the boundaries of project management research to better cope with the challenges faced by project management practice. Conducting academic research oriented to the actual needs and key issues of project management practice can better promote the development of academic research on project management and better empower the management practice of enterprises.

About the conference

International Project Management Association (IPMA) is a Federation of 71 Member Associations (MAs) worldwide. The MAs organise research and exchange activities to meet members’ needs in their respective contexts. However, the value of being a member of IPMA has always been to engage with peers in other countries and exchange ideas on advancing the discipline and learning from each other. This conference intends to continue the tradition and enable intensive dialogues across all borders. The IPMA Research Conference was founded in 2013. As a Think Tank, it aims to bring together researchers, experts, scholars and practitioners in project management who share a common passion for their discipline. During the conference, they discuss and exchange research ideas and achievements on the topic of projects and their management. The distinctive feature of this conference is the intense dialogue between practitioners and academics, which can neither be found at scientific nor professional conferences. The annual international conference has been held in Germany, China, South Africa, Iceland, South Korea, Brazil, Croatia and Serbia since its beginning and aims to bring together experts from all countries worldwide to increase the mutual understanding of the global challenges of project managers in diverse environments and industries. The unique spirit of the IPMA Research Conferences can be particularly felt in the World Café sessions, where the participants can gain new insight and perspectives for today’s challenges in project management.
