On November 21, the Chinese Academy of Engineering announced its 2025 Foreign Members. Professor Xie Yimin, Dean of the College of Future Technologies at Hohai University, has been elected as a Foreign Member.

Professor Xie Yimin was born in December 1963 and hails from Changzhou, Jiangsu Province. He earned his bachelor's degree from the Department of Engineering Mechanics at Shanghai Jiao Tong University and completed his master's studies under Academician Zhong Wanxie at the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He then pursued his doctorate at Swansea University in the UK, under the supervision of Professor Zienkiewicz, Fellow of the Royal Society. In 2002, Professor Xie joined RMIT University in Australia as a tenured professor and Head of Civil Engineering. He was elected Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences & Engineering in 2011.
Professor Xie is a globally recognized expert in structural topology optimization. His pioneering Evolutionary Structural Optimization method and the improved Bi-directional Evolutionary Structural Optimization method have made a significant impact worldwide, and have been successfully applied to major engineering projects both in China and abroad. Ameba, the topology optimization software developed by his team, is now a leading innovative design tool in architectural engineering.
In 2017, Professor Xie received the AGM Michell Medal, the highest honor in Australian mechanical engineering, and was appointed to the Expert Advisory Committee of the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council. In 2019, he was awarded the Australian Laureate Fellowship, the country's highest academic distinction. In 2022, he received the Sir John Holland Civil Engineer of the Year Award, the highest recognition in Australian civil engineering. To date, Professor Xie has published three English monographs and over 500 SCI papers, with more than 44,000 citations on Google Scholar. He is listed among Clarivate's Highly Cited Researchers and is globally acclaimed for his scholarly achievements.
Professor Xie has long championed engineering science and technology in China, making outstanding contributions. Leveraging his deep expertise and international reputation, he has been a driving force behind China's scientific advancement, fostering global collaboration and nurturing top talent. He joined Hohai University as Dean of the College of Future Technologies in early 2025.
