Recently, the 2021 ASCE Mid-Pacific Student Conference organized by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) was held online. A team on behalf of Hohai University, consisting of undergraduate students at the College of Civil and Transportation Engineering, participated in the 2021 Mid-Pacific Conference and achieved good results, ranking first in one competition and third in two competitions.
Under the guidance of teachers Wang Haitao, Qiu Ye, and Lu Man, students Qin Yixiao, Chen Kaijia, Sun Pangbo, Wang Xinyi, Yang Fan, and Chen Yu, who major in civil engineering since 2018, won the champion of the Sustainable Solutions Competition. The team has successfully integrated Hohai University's characteristic of soil-water fusion with the sustainable solution for the park site planning and conducted a series of research and design such as sustainability, transportation, drainage, run-off, aesthetics, ecology, and culture, thereby completing a Chinese style lifecycle park design work that features sustainability and advantages of Hohai University. Meanwhile, teachers Yu Miao and Zhang Xiaoli led Zhang Xin, Wang Xiaoyun, and Pang Xiaoya who major in transportation engineering since 2018 to win third place in the Transportation Competition. Qi Hanying, a student majoring in civil engineering under the guidance of teacher He Jia, won second runner-up in the paper competition. This is the best result in the history of our school in the competition.
The event attracted many famous Chinese and American civil engineering universities, including the University of California, Berkeley, the University of California, Davis, Tongji University, Zhejiang University, Southeast University, Dalian University of Technology, and Hohai University.
The American Society of Civil Engineers–International Student Group (ASCE-ISG) Hohai University Branch is one of the six core platforms of the community of innovative practice for civil engineering at Hohai University. Undergraduate students majoring in civil engineering and transportation at Hohai University make full use of this platform to carry out innovative activities. In recent years, Hohai University has been invited to actively carry out academic exchanges with famous civil engineering universities such as the University of California, Berkeley, the University of California, Davis, the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, the University of British Columbia, and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and competed with other universities in the world in the ASCE Student Conferences and CSCE Student Competitions for five consecutive years except for the suspension due to the COVID-19 in 2020, and won one champion and two runners-up in the finals; four champions, two runners-up, and seven second runners-up in co-host districts.
