Recently, XPRIZE, the world's top educational non-profit organization, announced that 23 student teams won the XPRIZE Carbon Removal Student Award. Among them, our students Zhang Bin, Shen Shutian, Pan Zhenghu, Wang Rui, Zhong Fan and Li Dong'ang finally stood out under the guidance of Associate Researcher Lian Yushun and Professor Zheng Jinhai in the research team for comprehensive treatment and protection of estuary & coast,HHU, and received R&D funds of USD 250,000. They were also supported and guided by Professor Liu Haixiao of Tianjin University, Professor Zhang Jihong and Director Shi Jiangao of Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences, and Jiangsu Industrial Technology Research Institute.
The Carbon Removal Student Competition is an international scientific and technological innovation activity organized by the XPRIZE, an educational non-profit organization, aimed at capturing carbon dioxide directly from the atmosphere or the ocean for persistent storage by collecting carbon removal assumptions from global young innovators and funding feasible winning programs. The money will be used to support the team to participate in subsequent milestone and grand prize competitions.
Next, the team will focus on deep water mooring technology, wave absorption technology, high-strength and light rope technology and other key issues to deepen and refine the program, so as to solve the problem that conventional seaweed farming facilities are concentrated in shallow offshore areas with limited space and can not adapt to the harsh sea conditions in the deep sea, and achieve the feasibility of removing 1,000 tons of carbon dioxide per year.
