The 2024 Hohai University International Summer School focus on the theme of Water Disaster Prevention under Climate Change, addressing the pressing challenges posed by water disasters resulting from extreme climate variations. This Summer School also serves as a dynamic platform for students and researchers from diverse backgrounds to exchange perspectives and expertise on climate change, a topic of global significance. The two weeks’ program also incorporated a blend of indoor lectures, interactive discussions, as well as enriching field trips to hydraulic structures and cultural landmarks. More than 10 well-known scientists in the field such as Academicians Prof. ZHANG Jianyun, Prof. XU Chongyu, Prof. HU Yaan, and Prof. Slobodan Simonovic gave lectures.
Engineering processes, economic impacts, and philosophical aspects of water management and pollution are thoroughly discussed by scholars and students from around the world, including those from Creighton University, the University of Lille, the University of Oslo, Monash University and Hohai University. These open-minded classes enable 68 students from 12 countries such as the USA, France, Norway, Australia, Pakistan, and Ghana, to expand their knowledge and broaden their perspectives. They gain the capability to understand and discuss the multi-scale impact of water disaster prevention and its central role in our society.
The summer program not only offers high-quality academic lectures but also a variety of cultural activities. Students can explore the historical and cultural heritage of Nanjing and Jiangsu through city tours, museum visits, and hands-on activities such as dumpling making and Chinese Kungfu. They also discover the natural beauty of the Jiangsu region visiting its lakes and mountains. These experiences allow them to connect deeply with Chinese culture and heritage and to take home a unique and memorable experience.
