On December 26, Huai Jinpeng, Secretary of the CPC Leading Group of the Ministry of Education and Minister of Education, visited Hohai University (HHU) to inspect the construction and operation of major scientific research platforms. Besides, he also learned about HHU's efforts in party building, moral education, campus security, supporting national strategies and industry development, and the cultivation of top innovative talents. Zhao Yan, Vice Governor of Jiangsu Province, accompanied the inspection.
Minister Huai and his delegation visited the Water Engineering Experimental Research Base at Niushoushan Science and Technology Park of HHU. They inspected key research projects, including the large-scale flow experiment for regulating and controlling the national water network power system, the physical model test of the harbor basin for resilient coastal protection engineering, the global flood and drought disaster simulation early warning and intelligent analysis system, and the intelligent water engineering detection equipment. They gained detailed insights into HHU's achievements in advancing the discipline of water conservancy engineering to support water disaster prevention and contribute to the construction of the national water network.
Minister Huai emphasized that as a responsible university where the revolutionary gene has been handed down from generation to generation, HHU must fully implement the decisions and deployments of the CPC Central Committee, especially the guiding principles of the National Education Conference. HHU should promote deep integration between party building and high-quality education development, focus on national strategic needs, highlight disciplinary and professional advantages, strengthen independent talent cultivation, advance technological innovation, expand international exchange and cooperation, maintain campus security and stability, and strive to contribute to China's endeavor to become a leading country in education.
He stressed that HHU should fully leverage its advantages as an industry-focused research university and firmly grasp the opportunities for water infrastructure construction as China ramps up efforts to implement major national strategies and build up the security capacity in key areas at the juncture of the closing of the 14th Five-Year Plan and the beginning of the 15th Five-Year Plan. HHU should actively align with national strategies and the needs of the industry and regional economic and social development, strengthen basic theoretical research in water science, make breakthroughs in key technologies, explore new models for enhancing innovation efficiency and independently cultivating top innovative talents, and continuously reinforce higher education's strategic supporting role in Chinese modernization. He encouraged HHU to leverage its distinctive advantages in cultivating talents under the Belt and Road Initiative to expand international exchange and cooperation with Central Asian countries and enhance HHU's reputation among international students. He also urged HHU to focus on the basic task of fostering virtue through education. HHU should translate its initiatives to contribute to China's great strength into actions in education through a student-oriented approach, enhance the synergy of moral education and curriculum design, and form a distinctive and valuable HHU approach.
Vice Governor Zhao pointed out that HHU has provided important support for Jiangsu's economic and social development in talent cultivation and scientific research, realizing win-win outcomes. Jiangsu will prioritize educational development and continuously increase investment in higher education to ensure the high-quality development of universities in the province.
Other leaders from the Ministry of Education, including Director of the General Office Zhu Xiaojie, Director of the Department of Higher Education Zhou Tianhua and Director of the Department of Science, Technology and Informatization Zhou Dawang, as well as Deputy Secretary-General of Jiangsu Provincial People's Government Qiu Zhiqiang and Director-General of Jiangsu Education Department Jiang Yong participated in the inspection. HHU's Party Secretary Yang Guishan and President Zheng Jinhai reported on the relevant work of the university.
